There’s something special about a library.
Not just the books on the shelves, but the people who make it all work; the librarians and staff who greet you, guide you, and quietly keep everything running day after day.
During Library Appreciation Week, we take a moment to recognize that. But around here, appreciation isn’t just something we talk about once a year…it’s something we try to show.
That’s where Friends of the Urbana Regional Library (FURL) comes in.
Over the years, FURL has made it a priority to support our librarians and staff in ways that often go unseen, but are felt every day. While the library operates within a set budget, there are always needs, ideas, and opportunities that fall just outside of it. That’s where community support steps in.
Sometimes it looks like small, thoughtful gestures like staff appreciation gifts to say thank you for everything they do.
Sometimes it’s practical support like providing items for programs or helping meet staff needs, like adding a employee refrigerator or coffee station to make long days a little easier.
And sometimes, it’s the bigger things that help shape the experience of the library itself.
If you’ve ever watched kids play and explore in the children’s area, relaxed on a bench outside, or seen teens gathered around a gaming system, you’ve seen FURL support in action. Features like the children’s play center, outdoor seating, and teen PS5 gaming systems are made possible through community contributions, helping turn the library into a space that truly serves everyone.
These aren’t extras. They’re part of what makes the library feel welcoming, alive, and connected to the people who use it.
Library Appreciation Week is a reminder that while books may be at the heart of a library, it’s people…both inside and outside its walls…who bring it to life.
To our librarians and staff: thank you for everything you do, every single day.
