Friends of the Library Leadership Lunch

Friends of the Library Leadership Lunch

Friends of the Library groups like FURL exist to support our local libraries in continuing their reach in the community. FCPL recently hosted the eight branches with Friends organizations to a lovely Leadership Luncheon held at the Myersville Community Library. We enjoyed open discussion, networking, hearing updates from our library leaders, and aligning ourselves with fundraising goals and best practices.

Book Review: Horse Diaries Series

Book Review: Horse Diaries Series

Sixteen different breeds of horses narrate this unique series “Horse Diaries”. Written by a variety of authors this series gives the reader a look into their respective breeds’ lives and how they play a role in horse history.

These breeds span across the globe; from beautiful Friesian horses and the famous Lipizzaner Stallions, to the Clydesdale who pulls the hay in the summer and the sleigh in the winter. From the Palominos who worked the Gold Rush and raced across the Wild West providing mail service with the Pony Express, to the Dapple Grey horse who pulls the fire truck braving the flames. The reader is transported back into time when horses played a critical role in our history before firetrucks, cars, mail trucks and plows were in existence.

An appendix follows each story with photos, facts about the horses and history about the year the diary was written.

This series of books are available at the Urbana Regional Library.

FURL's Bounce Back Grant Additions To Our Urbana Regional Library

FURL's Bounce Back Grant Additions To Our Urbana Regional Library

Have you noticed the new tables, chairs, benches, and bike rack at the front of the library?

FURL was a grateful recipient of the Frederick County Nonprofit Bounce Back Program in 2021. In accordance with the grant guidelines, FURL demonstrated a loss of income due to closures related to COVID-19, and we proposed a spending solution consistent with the goals and initiatives contained in the Livable Frederick guide - Frederick County’s dynamic approach to a vision-based comprehensive plan for the future.

Specifically, we proposed using FURL’s $10,000.00 grant on a front-building bike rack (to promote non-polluting transport) and benches, tables, and chairs (to promote community gathering out-of-doors). As required, our spending was complete by December 31, 2021, but due to COVID-related delays, we did not receive all of the equipment until the spring of 2022.

In early May 2022, FURL team members gathered and assembled the tables and benches, and they’ve been available for public use ever since. We appreciate FURL member Byron for making us aware of this grant, so that we all might benefit!

Bike over, grab a book, and have a seat in these newly created spaces!
